The taxidermy process falls into five phases, each vary in time depending on the species of animal. Every step is important to end up with a unique and beautiful mount.

  • SKINNING and PRESERVING THE SKIN
The hide must be removed with as few tears and cuts as possible so that the entire hide can be made whole again. After the hide is removed it must be 'skived' to remove all extra flesh, then salted down to dry and tan.
  • FITTING and MODIFICATION of the FORM
Forms are chosen carefully, according to the size of the hide. Spray foam is used to build up the form or to restructure the pose. The hide may be tried on the form several times before achieving a perfect fit.
  • MOUNTING and DRYING
The hide is fitted to the form and glued down. When in place, the hide will be sewn together at the seams and pushed against the form as it dries. The glue takes several days to completely dry and wrinkles in the skin will be sculpted in that time.
  • PAINTING
When the mount is dry, the area around the eyes, nose and ears will be airbrushed to look realistic. Some scars on the hide may be be camoflauged if requested.
  • HABITAT
A suitable, unique habitat is designed for life-size mounts, keeping in mind the size, color and position.
